companies, one of India's leading insurance companies and an aviation unit pioneered by J. R. D. Tata. In 1932, Tatas pioneered civil aviation. J. R. D. Tata gave lustre to the House and a
reputation for values to it for the next 52 years. Ratan N. Tata who succeeded him also
upheld these values well beyond the 20th century.
When J. R. D. took over the Chairmanship of Tata Sons Limited, the Group had 14 companies.
Under his stewardship the Group expanded to cover a range of industrial activities such as
commercial vehicles, engineering, hotels, air-conditioning and refrigeration, consultancy
services, information technology, consumer goods, consumer durables and industrial products.
Ratan N. Tata joined the Tata Group in 1962. He was named Chairman of Tata Industries
Limited in 1981, where he was responsible for transforming the company into a Group
strategy think-tank, and a promoter of new ventures in high technology businesses. In 1991,
Ratan N. Tata was appointed Chairman of Tata Sons Limited, the apex body of the Tata Group.
To meet the challenges of liberalisation, Ratan N. Tata had undertaken several measures
including restructuring of the Group, concentrating on seven core businesses and
consolidating Tatas in the field of information technology and expanding into telecommunications.
