J.N. TATA MEMORIAL RESTORED

In 1912, a memorial to the Founder of the Group, Jamsetji Nusserwanji Tata was unveiled in Bori Bunder, Bombay. The solemn ceremony paid homage to the rare genius and vision of this great man who founded the Tata Group that has today grown into one of India’s largest and most respected business organisations. A distinguished gathering of persons including his son, Sir Dorabji Tata were present at the memorial that  was erected with public subscriptions, from not just Bombay, but all over India.

This original memorial had four bronze statues including a bust of J.N. Tata,  an exquisite archangel and two other statues symbolizing ‘vision’ and ‘industry’ flanking these two central figures. Today the memorial has been relocated in a little green, roadside oasis, next to the Mantralaya.

The Managing Director T.R. Doongaji, Tata Services Ltd. had the restoration of the quartet commissioned in 2007 and the effort has been well appreciated.  The work was undertaken by Girikumar, Conservator.

WORKSHOP TO BE HELD AT TATA CENTRAL ARCHIVES

Tata Central Archives is holding a Workshop from 10-14th March, 2008 on 'Care and Maintenance of Archival Material.'

Most large businesses and archival institutions are faced with the challenge of the care of archival material that include paper, leather bindings, photographs, paintings, etc. that symbolise historical, sentimental, financial or legal value. With basic understanding and good care, keepers of these materials can lengthen their usable life exponentially.

The Workshop promises to be a hands on experience and will guide and train participants to understand materials under their care and how to treat them against damage and deterioration due to natural factors. Participants will include representatives from the major group Companies including Tata Steel, Tata Power, Tata Motors, TCS, etc. and also representatives from other archives.
